Tholkappiyar Tamil School, named in honor of the renowned Tamil scholar who lived 2000 years ago, offers a vibrant cultural learning environment.
Our Tamil school is accredited by WASC and affiliated with Hampton Roads Tamil Sangam, our school began in 2018 with a single class and has grown to accommodate 40 students across five different levels.

Mission

We are dedicated to nurturing a deep appreciation for Tamil culture and language. Our curriculum, developed in collaboration with the American Tamil Association, emphasizes not only language skills but also moral values and cultural awareness.

History and Background

The inception of Tholkappiyar Tamil School was a direct response to the community’s request during the festive gatherings of Deepavali and Pongal. Members of the Hampton Roads Tamil Sangam (HRTS) Executive Service Committee undertook extensive research, including visits to the well-established Richmond Tamil School, to devise a robust educational framework. Registered with the American Tamil Association, our school is a testament to the community’s dedication and collaborative effort. Our inaugural classes commenced on September 8, 2018.

Dr. Ganesan Kamatchi serves as the Principal of Tholkappiyar Tamil School, where he passionately promotes the learning and preservation of Tamil culture and language. With a distinguished career as a Professor of Biology, Dr. Kamatchi combines his academic expertise with his dedication to education, bringing a unique and enriching perspective to the Tamil school.

Academic Calender

Our academic year aligns with the Virginia Beach Public School calendar, running from September to June. Classes are held every Saturday from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM, ensuring our students’ education is consistent and fits well within family schedules.

Assessments & Recognition

Our students undergo three term exams annually, with a course completion certificate awarded at the end of the school year, marking their achievements and growth in their studies.
